Careers for Aging Adults
One doesn't often think in terms of careers for aging adults, but with Americans living longer and remaining more active and healthier than ever before, many seniors are entering careers late in life. Many people past middle age are perfectly capable of working at the same career they had enjoyed for many years, but others have to be a little creative to find a career that fits with the limitations of an aging body.
Aging adults have a great deal of career experience and sharing that knowledge can often turn into a full or part-time position. Many seniors who worked in technical fields offer their services as consultants to businesses in the same industry. In fact, some of these older adults actually work for the same company from which they retired and draw pension. The flexibility of a consulting career is especially appealing because the consulting contract can be for a specific period and then the subject matter expert can take some time off if they choose.
Another career that is becoming more and more popular for aging adults is e-commerce. Whether selling items on e-Bay or promoting an affiliate program for a product they believe in and trust. There are hundreds of opportunities for older people who have kept up with technology or are willing to take a few computer classes.
Careers for aging adults can sometimes result from a hobby. Because seniors who planned well for retirement are enjoying Social Security and other income, an activity that they had always wanted to try may turn out to be very marketable. Numerous authors and artists have come into their second career this way and become quite successful.
It is not uncommon for an adult past middle age to return to college and earn a degree preparing them for a brand new career. So many people who have worked for years in a career field they really didn't love get the opportunity to retrain and work for years at their true calling only later in their lives.
Careers for aging adults help the worker feel needed and have the opportunity to interact with other people. Many older Americans have experienced the loss of their spouse and all the children have grown and moved far away, leaving the senior with little motivation and joy in their lives. By entering a new employment field, their lives can be refreshed, renewed and as a result their health improve and their lives extended significantly.
Smart employers know that careers for aging adults make perfect sense. Older employees may not be quite as fast as the younger staff members but they also miss less time from work and are dedicated and loyal. Because many of the older employees are choosing to work for extra money rather than having to work to survive, these people bring wonderful attitudes into the workplace every workday.
If you are seeking a career for aging adults, don't be afraid to set out boldly into new frontiers. If you are an employer, you may find that providing career positions to older adults adds knowledge and depth to your workforce.
